Open vs Closed Handguards: Which Setup Protects Your Levers?

Open vs Closed Handguards: Which Setup Protects Your Levers?

Handguards are often chosen by colour, but their structure matters far more. Open motocross guards deflect roost and keep the cockpit light. Closed, wrap-around guards add an aluminium backbone intended to protect hands and levers from branches, stones and falls. The best choice depends on speed, terrain and how often the bike meets the ground.

Open guards: light and flexible

KTM's PIM describes the open two-component handguard as extremely light, with a strong central section and flexible coloured upper and lower sections. It mounts near the controls without connecting to the bar end.

  • Best for: motocross, fast practice tracks and riders prioritising low weight and free handlebar flex.
  • Protects against: roost, brush and light contact.
  • Trade-off: it cannot brace the lever area during a hard fall or a direct tree impact.

Closed guards: structure for technical terrain

The closed handguard kit uses a sturdy aluminium outer frame and a broad shield. PIM attributes include weather protection, protection from falls, stones and branches, and reduced risk of broken levers. That makes it the natural option for trail, hard enduro and supermoto riders who need the motorcycle to remain rideable after a low-speed crash.

Installation matters as much as the design

  1. Turn the handlebar fully left and right; hoses, cables and switches must remain free.
  2. Leave clearance around the brake and clutch levers so neither control touches the guard through its full travel.
  3. Align the aluminium backbone so a fall loads the bar mount, not the hydraulic line or master cylinder.
  4. Verify compatibility with the handlebar. Some PIM-listed kits specifically exclude Twinwall bars.
  5. After the first ride, recheck all fasteners and bar-end inserts.

Avoid the rigid-trap mistake

A closed guard should protect the hand without creating an awkward pocket around the wrist. Set the shield and lever angle together while standing in your normal attack position. If the cockpit feels crowded, change the mount or guard shape rather than rotating controls into an unsafe position.

Quick choice

Choose open guards for pure MX and maximum freedom. Choose a closed aluminium-backed system for forest trails, rocky enduro and frequent falls. Whichever style you prefer, confirm the complete mounting kit for the motorcycle and handlebar in the OEM Parts Finder; visually similar clamps are not always interchangeable.
